Biography

The Racing and Equestrian Club was established in 1975 in New Al Rayyan on Al Furousiya Street, His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed bin Faleh Al Thani occupies the position of Chairman of the Club, Mr. Hamad bin Abdul Rahman Al-Attiyah is the Vice Chairman of QREC, and Mr. Nasser Sherida Al Kaabi holds the position of General Manager of the Club

Located in New Al-Rayyan, QREC is charged with developing Thoroughbred and purebred Arabian horse racing events, organizing Arabian horse shows and encouraging horse owners to care for and race the best horses to develop horse production.

To this end, the state‑of‑the‑art facilities at QREC provide one of the most enviable horse training centers in the world.

Race events take place every Wednesday and Thursday from October to May with a total of 60 races held annually since 1975.

Under the auspices of HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, we are seeing an increased interest in equestrian and horse riding, the number of equestrian related facilities and arenas have subsequently been increased over the years, with facilities now matching or exceeding their international counterparts.

Since 2008, The Racing and Equestrian Club QREC has been the official sponsor of the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, which is held in Longchamp, Paris during the first weekend of October, the club will remain the official sponsor of this big race until 2022. One of the richest races on turf in the world, Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe attracts 70,000 spectators at the Longchamp every year, as well as over one billion television viewers.

The tracks are made from both sand and turf. There are also arenas hosting horse shows and national championships, in addition to platforms for audiences.

The stables are superbly equipped, and fully trained equine veterinarians are immediately on hand for the wellbeing of the horses.

The Racing and Equestrian Club issued the racing rules, making Qatar the first Arab country to issue rules for racing.

The Racing and Equestrian Club joined international organizations including the World Arabian Horse Organization (WAHO) in 1990 which oversees purebred Arabian horses  in member states , approves books of purebred Arabian horse breeds issued by the member states, and it also issues certificates of purebred Arabian horses and their breeds, and it has data of purebred Arabian horses all over the world.

In 1990, the State of Qatar became a member of the Executive Committee of the International Equestrian Federation.

International Federation of Horseracing Authorities (IFHA) in 1992: This federation is concerned with overseeing the races held by member states which reaches 68 countries around the world, provides the QREC with the latest methods and techniques of sponsoring and holding races, as well as issuing racing rules and regulations and supervising horse health care.

European Conference of Arab Horse Organizations (ECAHO) in 1994: supervises purebred Arabian horse shows held by member states around the world. It is worth noting that the State of Qatar, which has the most beautiful and purebred Arabian horses in the world, pays great attention to Arabian horse shows championships supervised by ICAHO, and attended by specialists from all over the world, in addition to representatives from ICAO and WAHO to supervise the competitions.

The International Federation of Arabian Horse Racing Authorities (IFAHR): established in 1999 the State of Qatar is one of the founding members, with the purpose of ensuring cooperation between Arab horse racing associations worldwide, and its members reach 27 countries.

In 2000, the State of Qatar chaired the Development and Classification Committee of the International Federation of Arabian Horse Racing Authorities (IFAHR). In November 2001, Qatar became a member of the Asian Equestrian Federation. In January 2002, the State of Qatar was elected as the Vice-President of the International Federation of Arabian Horse Racing Authorities (IFAHR).

Since 2008, the State of Qatar has been the President of the International Federation of Arabian Horse Racing Authorities (IFAHR).

Racings

Since its establishment in 1975, The Racing and Equestrian Club has organized local and international races held on its track in Doha, and worked towards encouraging horse owners to own the best horses in order to improve horse breeding, and also held races for all available horse breeds that are owned by local horse owners,

Since the 2000/2001 racing season, The Racing and Equestrian Club has additionally organized The Qatar International Festival, an annual week-long event. Arab and international horse owners, trainers and jockeys have taken part since the first festival in March 2001 in what is known as HH the Emir International Equestrian Sword Festival.
